The Ask

This one is personal for us. After years of living nearby, our 79-year-old mother with mobility issues needed a comfortable place to live independently while still receiving care and support from the family.

Our Approach

We designed an apartment within our home that allowed her to have family close and still enjoy some privacy. The whole space was designed to accommodate her, even if she needed full time care.

We considered not just her space but the whole living experience. We installed wider stairs with a hand rail at our back door and an emergency lockbox at the front door.

The Result

We converted the master suite and home office into a bedroom, bath and sitting room with widened entryways throughout to accommodate a wheelchair.

We redesigned the master bath to be totally handicapped accessible with standing and sitting vanities, plus improved lighting. We added heated floors to help keep it warm and ensure the floors would dry quickly to prevent slips or falls.

The new bathroom included a new comfort height toilet with bidet seat top. The shower was wheelchair accessible, featuring multiple shower heads for sitting or standing, and a handheld one if she needed assistance.

We installed vinyl plank flooring in the bedroom and sitting room to make it easier to use a walker or wheelchair.

We leveraged technology, adding an Alexa device that made it easy for Mom to call someone if she needed help.

We loved having Mom with us and she loved the fact that she still had her own personal space to entertain her friends and take a break from a household with three teenagers
